Millions of families have been forced to leave their homes in Syria and Iraq. Thankfully, they’ve found safety in Jordan and Lebanon. Suddenly, local authorities are dealing with serious challenges that affect people’s health and quality of life. So their counterparts in the Netherlands are helping them become more resilient. With durable solutions that meet immediate needs, while taking future scenarios into account.
The story
LONG-TERM, MULTI-SCENARIO PLANNING WITH A BROADER VISION
Local governments and fragile locations are at the heart of the refugee crisis. VNG International’s LOGOReP (Local Government Resilience Programme) contributes to the quality of life of both refugees and their host communities by offering expertise based on Dutch municipal experience.
These provisions of municipal expertise focus on the immediate and long-term resilience of Syria’s neighbouring countries, as they bear the responsibility of hosting millions of refugees.
We believe it is important to meet more than immediate needs. Because the future of refugee camps is ever-changing, our overarching principle is multi-scenario planning. We also pay specific attention to the needs of vulnerable groups such as children, women and the elderly.
IT IS IMPORTANT TO MEET MORE THAN IMMEDIATE NEEDS.
How does Logorep help?
WHAT MAKES VNG INTERNATIONAL AND LOGOREP DIFFERENT?
LOGOReP is based on peer-to-peer actions, with Dutch experts working together with their local colleagues in Jordanian and Lebanese municipalities. By working on-site, they can create solutions that work – and last. This is hands-on support, on a municipal level. So the project meets local needs, and is carried on into the future by local experts who understand their community and the needs of the people they serve.

The poorest refugees are often forced to live near areas not fit for human habitation such as waste dumps or polluted rivers.
OUR PROJECTS
Increased social harmony in public spaces. Greater opportunities for Syrian refugees and local citizens. VNG International’s LOGOReP projects are designed to extend beyond immediate help – and meet long-term needs as well.
In Ghazzeh, we helped create healthier environments. In Manarah and Aitanit, VNG International and LOGOReP helped reduce pollution. In the Zaa’tari camp, we targeted the needs of women, children and the elderly and achieved better governance. And by bringing unions to West Beqaa, we helped facilitate more efficient and effective local governments.
